Short answer: Austrian life-science teams usually begin by separating company-led applied R&D, academic basic research, startup development and European collaborative research. FFG, FWF, aws and EU programmes serve different applicants and activities. Use the official call page and current guideline to confirm eligibility, dates, funding form, cost rules and required partners before preparing a proposal.
Choose by applicant and project—not by agency name
A company developing a commercialisable technical solution, a university principal investigator pursuing basic research and an early startup financing company development do not present the same case. Begin with five facts: legal applicant, research question, technology maturity, commercial objective and planned cost categories. Then map those facts to current instruments.
Do not treat this article as a catalogue of open calls. Calls, budgets and conditions can change after publication. The useful purpose of a navigation guide is to show where to verify information and how to prepare an evidence package that survives programme changes.
Four routes to investigate
| Route | Typical orientation | Official check |
|---|---|---|
| FFG | Company-oriented applied research, development and innovation; some collaborative programmes | Current initiative page, call guideline and advisory contact |
| FWF | Basic research, researcher careers and scientific collaboration | Programme finder, application guidelines and eligible research organisation |
| aws | Startup, innovation and company financing or support instruments | Product page, target group, funding form and application manager |
| EU / EIC / Horizon Europe | European research, innovation, collaboration and selected high-risk ventures | Funding & Tenders Portal topic, work programme and national contact point |
FFG for company-led R&D
FFG describes itself as Austria’s national funding institution for industry-oriented research and development. Its Basisprogramm is open across topics and company sizes, including startups, and evaluates research and development projects with exploitation potential. That broad description is a starting point, not an eligibility decision.
For a specific submission, read the current programme and instrument guidance. Confirm whether the activity is industrial research or experimental development, when costs may start, how the financing mix works, which company data are required and how technical and economic risk are assessed. Use an advisory appointment for questions that materially change the proposal.
FWF for basic research
FWF’s portfolio covers areas of basic research, career development, projects for small or larger teams and cross-institutional or international collaboration. Applications are assessed through scientific review under the rules of the selected programme. A startup should not assume that a company-led product-development budget belongs in an FWF route merely because the underlying science is advanced.
University spinout teams often need to separate the academic research proposal from later company activities. Clarify who employs the researchers, who controls foreground intellectual property, which institution submits and where equipment or services will be used.
aws and the startup layer
aws provides company and startup instruments, including dedicated deep-tech and life-science routes. Product pages identify target groups, objectives, financing form and application path. These details are time-sensitive. Verify the current page and programme document rather than relying on a remembered amount or historical success story.
The application narrative must connect technical innovation with a credible organisation, work plan, resources and route to impact. For regulated life science, include the relevant development and regulatory milestones without presenting uncertain approvals as guaranteed.
EU programmes require a different operating model
Horizon Europe and European Innovation Council opportunities can involve international consortia, topic-specific scope, staged applications or blended support. The Funding & Tenders Portal is the authoritative place for active topics and documents. Read expected outcomes, scope, eligibility and evaluation criteria together; keyword similarity is not sufficient.
Before committing to an EU proposal, assess coordinator capacity, partner roles, reporting, data management, ethics, exploitation and co-financing. A large nominal opportunity can be a poor choice if the organisation cannot deliver the collaboration and reporting model.
Build a reusable evidence room
Keep these items current
- One-page project logic: problem, hypothesis, method, work packages and measurable outputs.
- Organisation facts, ownership, key team CVs and relevant track record.
- Technology status and evidence, with assumptions clearly labelled.
- Budget basis with quotations or calculation notes for significant costs.
- IP position, collaboration rights and data-management responsibilities.
- Risk register covering science, regulation, recruitment, suppliers and timing.
- Current source links and the date each programme condition was verified.
How equipment access fits a proposal
External equipment or facility access may be relevant to a research work package, but eligibility depends on the programme, instrument and cost treatment. Do not state that a future LabWallio session is automatically eligible. First define the scientific task and required access; then ask the programme contact how that cost should be evidenced and budgeted.
Compare access options using written scopes and quotations. A reviewer should be able to see why the route is technically necessary, proportionate and deliverable. Our access-versus-ownership framework helps structure that comparison.
A disciplined sequence
- Write the project facts and applicant constraints.
- Use official finders and advisory services to shortlist routes.
- Read the latest call and instrument documents in full.
- Record eligibility questions and resolve them with the responsible contact.
- Align work packages, evidence, budget and risks with the evaluation criteria.
- Run an independent consistency review before submission.
